Gov. Steve Beshear has announced the 2013 Governor’s Commemrative Derby poster will feature a photograph of Smarty Jones by John Stephen Hockensmith, noted Kentucky equine photographer. “I am honored to continue this time-honored tradition of unveiling the commemorative Derby poster,” said Gov. Beshear in a press release from Kentucky.gov. “This artwork exemplifies the excitement and enthusiasm that surround the greatest two minutes in sports and serves as a wonderful memento for the public,”
Smarty Jones was the first undefeated Derby winner since 1977’s Seattle Slew. He became only the tenth horse to go on to win the Preakness. Smarty Jones retired to stud in 2004 at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway Kentucky. His charisma and will to win made him and Thoroughbred horse racing popular at a time when the racing industry was suffering from low attendance at Kentucky racetracks
. The poster is available for purchase at governor.ky.gov. for $15 and will also be available at the Governor’s Downtown Derby Day Celebration on Derby Day. Poster sales benefit First Lady Jane Beshear’s Horses and Hope Program which provides breast cancer education, screening and treatment for employees in Kentucky’s Thoroughbred industry and the Equine Health and Welfare Alliance, Inc. which supports equine health and safety in the state.
The 77th annual Governor’s Derby Celebration will be held in downtown Frankfort on Kentucky Derby Day, Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
