Former UK Hoops guard and two-time SEC Player of the Year A’dia Mathies was taken No. 10 overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in Monday night’s WNBA draft. Mathies is now the highest draft pick and just the second first-round pick in program history.
Mathies’s illustrious career with the Cats is sprinkled all over the school’s record book. Mathies led the team in scoring her senior season, scoring double-digits in 34 of the team’s 36 games. She also led the team in three-point field goals in 2013.
For her career, she is the program’s record-holder in games played, games started and steals. She is also second all-time in three-pointers made and free throws made.
Mathies ranks second in all-time scoring at UK with 2,014 career points, making her one of just five former Wildcats (men or women) to score 2,000 career points.
“All of us are thrilled for A’dia,” UK Hoops head coach Matthew Mitchell said in a UK Athletics release. “She did so much for the Kentucky program while she was here and we had no doubt she was one of the top players in the country. Being chosen as first-round pick just shows what she did for us and how hard she worked to get here. I think the Los Angeles Sparks made a great pick.”
