The UK Track & Field team posted an impressive performance on Saturday in the inaugural Heart of the Bluegrass Classic. An athlete from the Cats won 28 of the 29 events the team entered on Saturday in the first event held in the brand new UK Track & Field Facility.
“The point today was less about performance, more about putting on a good show for the crowd,” head coach Edrick Floreal said in a UK Athletics release. “We also wanted the alumni to be part of this after 17 years without an outdoor track meet. It was more of a thank you.”
Two UK athletes set school records in the team’s home meet. Cally Macumber set a school-record in the mile run with a time 4:37.75, and Michelle Canterna set a new program-record vault height of 3.87 meter/12’08.25″.
Saturday was also Senior Day for UK”s Track & Field team. Katy Achtien, Kevin Bonfield, Keith Hayes, Shelby Kennard, Ben Mason, Shiara Robinson, Danielle Sampley, Luis Orta and Megan Wright were all honored as their careers in Kentucky came to a close.
For the third year in a row, the Track & Field program also hosted a shoe drive at Saturday’s meet to those less fortunate around the world. Patrons donated any kind of shoe into collection bins at the front of the new complex. The bins will remain in that spot to collect donations through May 10.
