Many of the UK students interviewed for this story couldn’t weigh in on their thoughts on election day because many of the students didn’t vote.
Some students, like journalism sophomore Aaron Smith, simply don’t care about the politics and chose not to vote.
“I feel like I just don’t care,” Smith said. “I’m the typical sports-loving guy and I don’t feel like my vote makes a difference.”
Similarly, Alvin Davis, a civil engineering freshman, voted, but admitted that his knowledge of the candidates and issues was limited and that he didn’t care much about politics.
New to the Lexington area, Davis recently registered to vote in Fayette County and said that he selected candidates from one political party without learning the specifics of their policies.
Davis added: “I was thinking about not voting, but a friend urged me to.”
Despite the number of those with little to no interest in politics on campus, or those that exercised their right to vote simply because they have the right to vote, one student to share her opinions on the importance of taking one’s trip to the polling booth seriously.
Martha Groppo, a journalism junior, didn’t want to shun her civic duty in an election year that she said was critical to the balance of power, particularly on the national level.
“In this election, the balance of power is in the balance,” Groppo said. “The economy is a big issue and it encompasses the budget, the deficit, healthcare and taxes.”
Although Groppo said that voting was of the utmost importance, she added that she would only cast a vote for races that she could make an informed decision about.
“I don’t always vote for candidates,” she said. “If it comes to two candidates I don’t know, or I don’t like very much, I’d have to make a judgment call on whether I would vote.”
