The University of Kentucky’s student-run radio station, WRFL, opened its doors to students and community members for an afternoon of music, activities and celebration.
The WRFL Open House took place at the station on March 7, welcoming visitors from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Gatton Student Center.
Attendees had the opportunity to celebrate WRFL’s 37th birthday. The event featured a variety of activities, including a photo booth, a “blind date with a CD” activity and sweet treats for visitors to enjoy.
The idea for the open house was inspired by WRFL’s annual Birthday Bash celebration on March 8.
“In the past, we have a kickoff event that generates hype and excitement and is usually some sort of get-together with the community. This year, we wanted to do something different with a WRFL Week, so we had an event every single day,” Will Majors, WRFL’s events director, said.
WRFL members have been working on putting together the Birthday Bash for the past few months as it’s the biggest event of the year for the organization.
“This year, we booked three bands: Geese from Brooklyn and two local bands, Treg from Louisville and Valus from Lexington. We go to The Burl, they play a show, and we have a good time. There’s merch and it’s an opportunity to represent the station,” Majors said.
For those interested in joining WRFL as a DJ, reporter, or a behind-the-scenes contributor, the event will provide students the opportunity to talk with members and see if it is something they want to pursue.
“We hold orientation events three times a year, with the next one coming up this summer,” Majors said.
Students can join training events to learn how to be a DJ and get the on-air experience needed to be assigned a trainer DJ and eventually apply for their own show.
