Among the 28,037 students who attend the University of Kentucky (Fall 2010 estimate), approximately 600 of those study abroad every year. That is about 1 out of every 50 students.
Because of the growing popularity of the newly-created International Studies major, the new General Education requirements that focus on global dynamics and because UK doubled its faculty in its education abroad program last fall, that number is expected to increase.
A Jan. 2009 study by the ACE peer review team compared UK’s “Global Kentucky” strategic plan to schools like Michigan State University, the University of Montana and Indiana University.
“UK is well-positioned to continue its work in internationalization because it has all the key ingredients: leadership, energy and systems for establishing learning goals and assessing their outcomes,” ACE’s report said.

Similarly, UK’s Institutional Research, Planning, & Effectiveness found that in Fall 2010, minority and international students made up 16% of UK’s entire student population. (See other statistics from IRPE here.)
