One week from today the deadline to register to vote in Kentucky’s 2011 primaries for local and statewide offices. After Friday, 4/18, Kentuckians will no longer be able to register to vote in the primary elections on 5/17.
Republicans will be able to select nominees for Governor and Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Auditor and Commissioner of Agriculture. Democrats will select nominees for Secretary of State, Commissioner of Agriculture and State Treasurer.
Kentucky is one of a handful of states that elect state offices on ‘odd-years’ from presidential and congressional elections. Though this leads to lower turnout, it also frees statewide contests from the influence of national issues and allows candidates to focus on the state.
This year’s Republican gubernatorial primary features Kentucky Senate President David Williams and running-mate Richie Farmer, ex UK-Wildcat and Agricultural Commissioner. Kentucky’s current governor, Democrat Steve Breshear, does not face a primary challenge.
Those who are Kentucky residents but are not yet register can go to the drivers licensing bureau, their respective county clerk’s office, or online at http://elect.ky.gov/register.htm .
