Here on the University of Kentucky campus, Spring has definitely sprung in true Kentucky fashion, crazy weather style! For the past couple of days, Lexington has been experiencing thunderstorms and tornado watches throughout the week, but hopefully all the commotion will hold off for a couple of hours tonight. Why? Well, today is unofficially “Party Day” at UK. Two events will be happening this evening geared toward helping UK students let loose, relax, and to get out and be social before the Spring 2011 semester ends.
The UK Student Government Association (SGA) will kick-off the inaugural “Cram Jam” event, where students can come out and be social and play games, prizes, get free t-shirts and free food. One thing that is sure to appeal to the masses is including “free” anything, especially for college students.
Student Government Deputy Chief of Staff, Anna Hays, says this a chance for students across campus to come together and enjoy food and games during UK’s “dead week.”
“It was just an idea for Student Government to reach out to students as a way of saying “thank you” for us being able to work with and serve students all year long. So this is our opportunity to say thanks and welcome everyone over to Memorial Coliseum for kind of that end of the semester celebration,” Hays says.
Hays also says that [SGA] hopes to see the Cram Jam become a lasting tradition for UK students to enjoy and [SGA] will make every effort to make this a continuing event every year.
Before the Cram Jam, students are welcomed by the UK ‘Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow’ to the (STAT) Spring Chill, which will be a much more laid back and relaxing “lawn” event. This event will be another outlet for students to get out and be social and ultimately take some time off from studying and enjoy food prizes, games, and more.
UK Alumni Association Program Coordinator Meg Phillips says, even though studying for finals is important, everyone needs to take a break once in awhile and the Spring Chill offers just that.
“I think it’s important to take a break from studying every once in awhile. You don’t want to exhaust yourself with only thinking about school, so it offers the opportunity to rest your head a little bit, get out, and see people and enjoy outdoors for a little while,” says Phillips.
The whole goal of the UK-SGA and UK Alumni Association putting together two back-to-back events is to really help students get their minds off of school work for a little while and to just plain have fun. I mean, isn’t that what college is really all about? Besides advancing your knowledge in a given field, finding out who you are as a person, and entering adulthood. What about partying!? Well, maybe these events aren’t the first thing that comes to the mind of a college student when they think of “partying,” but nevertheless they’re parties.
So for those students looking to get out and have a little fun before final exams (pending weather) here’s the schedule.
- STAT Spring Chill – Tonight from 5pm to 7pm at the King Alumni House (Corner of Euclid & Rose)
- SGA Cram Jam 2011 – Tonight from 7pm to 10pm at Memorial Coliseum
For everyone here at BlueCoastLive, have a great summer break and good luck returning and graduating students!
