Sometimes the littlest thing can make the biggest difference and Friday some of Lexington’s littlest voices were honored.
As part of the seventh annual Constitution Day celebration at the University of Kentucky, students from Christ the King school and Tates Creek High School came to visit. Earlier in the year, the eighth and ninth graders lobbied for the Henry Clay-Sandra Day O’Conner Act.
The students were successful in their efforts and the bill will be introduced with bipartisan support in the next legislative session in Frankfort. The bill is currently co-sponsored by State Representative Kathy Stien and State Senator Alice Forgy Kerr. If approved, the bill will change how social studies is taught in Kentucky.
According to the official Facebook page supporting the bill, students would learn about civics in all grade levels and focus on subjects like American Origins, Branches of Government, Duties of Citizenship and International Relations. Civics would also extend into Language Arts, Music and Art classes where it would make up at least 10% of the class’s content.
