President Eli Capilouto delivered his first State of the University address Monday. He expressed his pride for the university he now calls home as well as for the entire state of Kentucky. Capilouto mentioned the many changes coming in UK’s future with further faculty research, the new UK core program and UK’s work in Kentucky and abroad, such as with the Haitian students studying here now.
Emceed by one of UK’s most prestigious alumni, ESPN’s Tom Hammond, both Capilouto and UK Student Government President Micah Fielden received strong introductions. Fielden spoke first and highlighted how UK has shaped his experiences and made him the person he is today. In turn, he asked students to question what they can do to leave their impression on this school.
Capilouto followed Fielden and spoke about all that he has experienced in his short time here. He said that he is excited for the incoming freshman class, which is the most accomplished ever with an average 3.6 high school GPA.
Capilouto said that this is proof that the best and the brightest are coming to UK.
Capilouto also said that these students are in for the best education that can be provided in the twenty-first century. With UK’s new core curriculum, students are going to be exposed to the arts and sciences and will learn to be global citizens.
