Dashanda Player is an employee at the University of Kentucky. She works to provide for her children and grandchild. And, thanks to some help from UK students, she is about to become a homeowner for the first time.
Player is the first recipient in what UK’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity hopes becomes an annual tradition at UK. The group, partnered with the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council, is building Player’s home on campus. The build is taking place in a parking lot just across the street from Commonwealth Stadium. After the home’s framework is complete, it will be taken to its permanent location and completed.
Student volunteers say they’ve been attempting to build a house on campus for some time. This semester, through partnerships with multiple organizations, they were able to raise enough money and gain enough support. UK student Emily Andrews says she hopes building on campus will help raise awareness for the project. But Player isn’t leaving all the work to students. Rather, she and her children are strapping on their tool belts as well. Player says she has enjoyed working alongside students, and that she’s excited to have a home of her own. She’s dedicating this project to her late grandmother, Inez. In fact, the build started last Saturday, her grandmother’s birthday.
Students will continue to work on the home every weekend in groups of about 15 until it is finished. They say the house should be complete by the end of November.
