Election Day is nearly upon us. One group of leaders in particular have been preparing for it for a long time.
The Kentucky College Republicans are prepping themselves and those around them to get out and vote on Tuesday. State Chairman of the Kentucky Federation of College Republicans (KFCR) Brian Rose, says that the past couple of weeks have been filled with door-to-door efforts that are reminding people to get out and vote.
Last Saturday the College Republicans began what’s called the “72 hour push”, which Rose says “stepped up their efforts, with more mass force to get people to come out and vote.” During the month of October, College Republicans from chapters all across the state have been in offices located around Kentucky, making voter ID and persuasive phone calls. Rose stresses to everyone that with elections so close, that “now’s the time to step up and make a difference.”
With Kentucky being one of only four states that have off-year elections (Louisiana, Mississippi, and New Jersey are the others), Rose concedes that this year, College Republicans are not expecting great results and voter turnout.
“This year we expect a very low voter turnout and are well aware of the consensus that no one is really excited about the elections this year. It’s no secret that the Governors race from our standpoint has been an uphill battle. Historically, state-wide, this state continues to be heavily democratic.” Rose says.
Besides the race for Governor, College Republicans remain optimistic about the other races. Rose says the races are “closer than some believe.”
Despite the outcomes of tomorrow’s elections, Rose and other College Republicans will feel that this has been a successful year in terms of recruiting and expaning, which were two main focuses heading in to 2011. “From August to October, our state expanded from five chapters across the state, to 15.”
Rose says the College Republicans will keep fighting for what they believe in because that’s what they know.
