A UK graduate who leaves for a job in Afghanistan on Feb. 5 is being honored Wednesday with a 2012 Algernon Sidney Sullivan Medallion, which recognizes service to the community, country and global community.
Elizabeth Rebmann, a December 2011 UK graduate with a degree in geography, is being recognized with a special ceremony before the other recipients because she is leaving for Afghanistan to work as a security analyst for the U.S. government, according to a UK news release.
UK President Eli Capilouto will present Rebmann with the medallion.
The award is the highest honor in community service presented at UK, the release said, given to those who demonstrate “such characteristics of heart, mind, and conduct as evince a spirit of love for and helpfulness to other men and women.”
From 2007 to 2008, Rebmann completed a tour of duty in Iraq with the Kentucky National Guard, and then she volunteered to be part of the Army’s Agribusiness Development Team in Afghanistan while she was enrolled at UK, according to the news release. She organized and participated in many community service activities while in Afghanistan, such as a winter clothing drive and school-supplies drive for local children. She has also volunteered in Lexington with the local Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter.
Rebmann will be honored at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Lexmark Room of UK’s Main Building. The other recipients of the Sullivan Medallion will be honored at the Founders Day Celebration on Feb. 22.
