Who else sees parking meters as a piece of metal formed by some demon from the deep out to steal your change for no good reason? I know I do. But the Kentucky Blood Center and the Downtown Lexington Corporation are out to change that. Impact Change is a project that started at the end of January and helps the homeless of Lexington. You might be wondering what a parking meter and a homeless individual have in common (other than asking for your change). But there’s a lot there! The DLC had three artists decorate 20 retired parking meters and then had them placed around the city.
If anyone has any spare change left over they can put them in these meters and the money will be donated to organizations that help with homelessness in Lexington. Penny Ebel, Vice President of Events and Programs, says this is more of an awareness program because not many people know the estimated number homeless in Kentucky is 6,623 with almost a third of those being children. Exchanging money hand-to-hand with a homeless individual does very little to provide him or her with food or shelter so the Impact Change program seeks to donate your change to organizations that are dedicated to giving food and shelter to the homeless of Lexington.
