UK’s Beyond Coal Coalition will speak tomorrow at the Board of Trustees meeting at 11 am. Students belonging to the group are working towards making the University become a clean energy leader.
UK student Elaine Alveywill testify before the Board of Trustees Finance Subcommittee, asking for a replacement of the 1950‘s coal-burning power plant. The plant, located between South Limestone and South Upper Street, provides heat and hot water for campus buildings.
The coalition is asking UK to commit to climate neutrality and research neighboring universities like Ball State and the University of Louisville, who are already making strides towards a clean energy transition.
Coal Coalition member Kristen Vinson said the group has been working really hard over the past few months to convince the University to transition to sustainable resources in regards to the coal boilers on campus and they will be requesting the Board to conduct a feasibility study.
The meeting will be followed by a press event at 11:45 am in Rm. 245 of the Patterson Office Tower.
