Thanksgiving week is the biggest travel holiday of the year, so we would all expect heavy travel all week, correct? Well being at 3 different airports yesterday, I was very surprised to see that each airport was pretty mild, with its usual amount of people.
I do believe this is because more people are traveling by car to avoid airport hassle, delays, and the unexpected change of plans. It is reported that 90% of travelers will be traveling by car and just about 3 million are expected to travel by plane.
Here are some pictures that were taken at 2 different airports, one that usually has less people and another that is a gateway for many people! Still oddly, the same amount of people.
Although it is only Tuesday, so that means tomorrow will most llikely be the busiest travel day for people flying because of days off of work for the holiday. So do not plan to get your hopes up that most airports will be like this all week…some people were just able to be the rush.
Some tips while traveling this week provided by the American Red Cross:
ON THE ROAD Most holiday travelers get to where they are going by car. To arrive safely, the Red Cross recommends these safety steps for travelers who will drive to visit their loved ones this Thanksgiving:
- Make sure the vehicle is in good working order.
- Start out with a full tank of gas, check the tire air pressure and make sure the windshield fluid is full.
- Buckle up, slow down, don’t drive impaired. Designate a driver who won’t drink.
- Be well rested and alert.
- Use caution in work zones.
- Give one’s full attention to the road. Avoid distractions such as cell phones.
- Observe speed limits – driving too fast or too slow can increase the chance of being in a collision.
- Make frequent stops. During long trips, rotate drivers. If the driver is tired, stop and get some rest.
- Be respectful of other motorists and follow the rules of the road.
- Don’t follow another vehicle too closely.

If flying:
- Book plane tickets well in advance — airplanes seat fewer and fewer people these days. If you’re flying via Detroit, Houston, Washington, Boston, Philadelphia, or Minneapolis, watch out! Numbers of seats and flights have been reduced the most at those airports.
- Allow at least one hour between connecting flights.
- A nonstop flight isn’t always the best choice. You and your kids may welcome the chance to get off the plane for a while, in between flights.
If riding the train:
- Look for “passenger extra” trains — they tend to be less crowded.
