With 61% of the votes, Democrat Jack Conway defeated the Republican candidate Todd P’Pool in Tuesday’s election to serve his second term as Kentucky’s Attorney General. Conway along with the other democratic candidates gathered with supporters and media at the Frankfort Convention Center immediately following the election. The polls closed at 6 p.m. (EST), and just before 7:30 p.m. (EST) the results rolled in and Conway’s victory was secured.
Conway, who dedicated the victory to his family, stepped on stage to give his speech with his wife and two young daughters by his side. Conway gave out many thanks in his victory speech including one to his home of Jefferson County “I’ve been all over this state,” he said “but there’s no place like home.”
One of Conway’s main goals in his second term as Attorney General is continuing his commitment to making Kentucky a safer place to live, work and raise a family. With a heavy focus on improving Internet safety, Conway created the Cybercrimes unit in 2008. In his victory speech, Conway enthusiastically announced the success of the unit as it recently hit the the 3,000 mark, meaning over 3,000 child porn images taken off the internet.
Another hot issue that has played a large part in Conway’s first term in office and in his campaign is the prescription drug abuse problem in Kentucky. Conway said he and Gov. Steve Beshear are going to be aggressive with the issue this session. With his re-election, Conway said next year he will be named Chairman of the Democratic Attorneys General, giving him a national platform to stand up on some of these consumer protection issues.
“The very nature of being the Attorney General is you stand up for those who sometimes can’t stand up for themselves,” said Conway in his speech.
After losing to Republican Rand Paul in the 2010 Senate race, Conway said he tried to take the opportunity in this election to tell the people of Kentucky about what he has done as Attorney General, as he did not have the time and resources to do so in last year’s Senate race.
“There were a lot of people in this campaign who wanted the opportunity to write my political obituary, but the reports of my demise are awfully premature,” said Conway in his speech.
As for his opponent, Conway said P’Pool was wrapped up in the ‘Washington games,’ and focused more on federal issues than the issues significant here in Kentucky.
