An explosive second quarter helped Owensboro Catholic easily advance to the quarterfinals of the Girls’ Clark Pump-N-Shop Sweet 16 with a 59-35 win over Letcher County Central on Thursday night.
At Rupp Arena, the Aces (26-9) played their cards right in the second quarter, outscoring the Cougars 24-3 to take an 18-point lead into the half. The lead ballooned to as many as 36 points in the third quarter, but never dipped below 18 the rest of the way.
Owensboro Catholic had three players in double figures behind 14 points and four steals from Katie Hagan. Sophia Newby added 13 points and five rebounds, and Claudia Munsey chipped in 11 points.
Aggressive defense by the Aces set the tone early. They were able to open the game on a 9-1 run before junior Molly Caudill drilled two threes late to spur the Lady Cougars on an 11-2 run to end the first and give them the lead.
“We had to relax and just play basketball,” Coach Michael Robertson said. “We were getting turnovers in the first quarter, we just weren’t converting like we should have. In the second quarter, I thought the floodgates opened.”
Owensboro Catholic opened that pivotal second quarter in a full-court press on defense and remained in it for the entirety of the second and third quarters, forcing 18 turnovers in the first half alone and 30 in all. The Aces scored 33 points off those miscues. Layla Martin’s seven steals led the way.
Running the full-court defense for that long with starters playing for most of the game could lead to conditioning issues, but junior Taylor Mannahan said that was not an issue for the Lady Aces.
“We’ve been doing it all season,” she said. “We play on a college court as well, for our home court back in Owensboro. Just playing through that most of the season and practicing on it really keeps us conditioned.”
The physicality of the full-court, trapping defense led to a turnover on more than half of Letcher County Central’s offensive possessions.
“This is exactly how we envision it,” said Hagan, who scored all her points in the paint for the Aces, who scored 40 points near the basket. “I think for most of our games, our defense is really our strong part, and that leads to offense.”
Molly Caudill led the Cougars, who made just 33.3% of their shots, with 11 points. Although it was a rough game for his team, head coach Keith Baker said he’s still happy with the year they had.
“It’s a big deal getting here,” Baker said. “Every year we just set the goal to get to Rupp, and our kids did that.”
The last time a team from Letcher Central’s 14th Region won a game at the Sweet Sixteen was in 2008.
Owensboro Catholic continues its search for its first Sweet 16 title when it takes on Simon Kenton (32-2) in round two of the Sweet 16 on Friday at 6 p.m. ET.
